The US Pharmacopoeia releases draft Stevia standards

release time:2020-06-08   2949People browsing

The US Pharmacopoeia (USP) has released a draft new ingredient treatment standard for the Food Composition Pharmacopoeia (FCC). The new draft, which includes probiotics, stevia, resting acid acid, infant formula and spice ingredients, is currently seeking advice from the industry.

The FCC is a summary of the ingredients * * * * and tests that ensure the quality, purity, and safety of the product, covering more than 1,100 food ingredients. The USP is responsible for developing these standards and publishing FCC abstracts.

For the new standards for probiotics, the USP says that consumers have a strong demand for probiotics, and the new application of probiotics also promotes the development of the standards for probiotics in the FCC Appendix. For the new stevia standard, the USP indicates that the extracted stevia glycosides in stevia leaves have multiple configurations that have been increasingly used in food and beverage products. Although the Lebaudine A monograph has already been developed previously, the new criteria are also extended to other stevia glycoside configurations. An important component of the new standard is about the isolation and detection method of identifying all nine stevia glycosides.

The draft has been released online, and the comments will end on March 31.
