The sweetener stevia is allowed in the EU, the European Commission announced on Monday. This sweetener originating from natural plants has the potential to replace synthetic sweeteners such as aspartame currently used in foods.

'The decision to use the sweetener,' the Commission said in the same communique, 'came after receiving the support of the European Food Safety Agency.'

Stevia is a new natural sweetener derived from a wild herb stevia native to Paraguay. It is 200 to 300 times sweeter than sucrose and only 30 percent of calories. Stevia is expected to be an alternative to the first generation sugar source —— sucrose and the second generation sugar source —— aspartame.

International sweetener industry data show that stevia has been widely used in food production in Asia, South America and the United States.China is one of the world's major stevia producers.
